"The Club had a humble beginning in 1958 when a few enthusiasts decided to form a rugby club in the fast growing area to the east of Melbourne, and appropriately named it the Eastern Suburbs RUFC. They gathered together a group of young players, the nucleus being from the Box Hill Boys High School who, together with several older players then granted dispensation, was entered in the 1959 Victorian Rugby Union Colts (Under 19) competition.
Great names from the Club who have been State representatives have included Patsy McGoldrick, Norm Ridgeway and Ron Saunders. Patsy went on to coach the Australian Schoolboys side to an undefeated tour of New Zealand, a tough ask at any time. The Club was proud to have Andrew Coombe and Cameron Frater (both started as juniors with the Club) as the first players from Victoria to be selected for the Australian Institute of Sport Rugby Union scholarship program. This program is the nursery for players from around Australia for future Wallaby sides. Cameron & Andrew played for Victoria and Andrew went on to play for Queensland.
Completion of the 40th Anniversary of competition was celebrated in 1999, a very successful year for the Club. Melissa Latu and Anita Carlin were selected for the Australian Womens team and Rex Tapau was selected for the Australian under 16 team. A big highlight was the First XV winning the first First Grade Premiership in the Clubs history. This was an excellent reward for President Harvey Coombe, the Board and Senior Coach Bob Stevenson. The Club has since won the First Grade Premiership in 2000 and 2001, the Third Grade in 2003 and the Womens in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011.
The Box Hill Rugby Union Football Club, from a modest start in 1958, has developed into a major force in Victorian Rugby Union. With its mission and goals specifically aimed at junior development, the Club is positioned to achieve greater success, both for the Club and for the players who represent the club.
During this time the club has come up with some fantastic ideas and innovative plans to ensure the strength of the club continues long in to the future.
One of the main areas the club was looking to improve on was the way in which it was currently communicating with its players, members, supporters and sponsors.
With a forward thinking and a dynamic board the club was actively pursuing different methods which would enable them to improve on their existing communication channels.
